We don’t ask for money enough. There—I said it.
Education Voters is a go-to resource for information, for advocacy, and for following what is happening in Harrisburg. And we have been a leading force in Pennsylvania’s education advocacy and policy community. We helped put together the campaign and strategy for a fair funding formula. We have led on challenging poor charter school policy. We have fought to restore devastating education cuts. And, we are a leading voice in opposition to ill-conceived school privatization proposals that would undermine public education in Pennsylvania. Our reports are regularly cited in the news and by experts. Policymakers trust us as a resource for information.
And — we forget to ask you to chip in. Or we are working on other things and think I’ll get back to that when it isn’t so busy. It is always busy. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Right now, we are headed into an incredibly busy stretch.
Here is my to-do list. I am sharing this with you, along with my request for your support.
- Fight to help ensure districts with the fewest resources receive a “level up” supplement to begin to immediately address the needs of the state’s most underfunded districts, which have been ignored for too long.
- Make sure the federal dollars from the American Recovery Act are spent in ways that are student-centered and build stronger public schools. Read more about what the plan means for schools here.
- Fight to fix the charter school special education funding loophole that allows charters to reap a profit off of students with disabilities and spend/waste their excess special education funding on advertising, lavish CEO salaries, and more.
- Do extensive outreach on the PA School Funding lawsuit so more communities are able to follow its progress and pass resolutions in support of the lawsuit.
- Fight for the Nellie Bly scholarships to help reduce crushing student debt by ending Pennsylvania’s preposterous $200 million/year subsidy for wealthy race horse owners.
- Oppose school privatization and voucher schemes that funnel tax dollars into unaccountable private and religious schools.
- Conduct multiple training sessions for parents and community members who want great public schools for every child.
- Raise the money to keep this organization that I am very proud of going, asking for contributions and preparing several grant proposals.
