PA Should Not Opt Into A Program With So Many Unanswered Questions.

The federal voucher program raises serious questions about oversight, accountability, who will benefit, and how taxpayer dollars will be spent. Pennsylvania should not commit to a program when so much remains unknown.

The federal school voucher program would represent a significant change in how federal tax dollars are used to support private education. While many important details are still unknown, what we do know raises serious concerns about oversight, accountability, and Pennsylvania’s ability to protect taxpayers and students.

If Pennsylvania opts in, the Commonwealth would have little flexibility to establish its own rules or safeguards. Eligibility would extend to families earning well into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, public school districts would receive no direct funding, and private scholarship organizations would play a significant role in administering and overseeing the program.

At the same time, major questions remain unanswered about how vouchers will be distributed, how fraud and misuse will be prevented, what information families will be required to provide, and how much it could cost Pennsylvania to administer the program.

With so much still unknown—and potentially long-lasting consequences for Pennsylvania’s education system—the Commonwealth should not rush into a decision to participate.
