Now we hold lawmakers accountable for every child’s education

This week Pennsylvanians elected representatives in Harrisburg who will spend the next two or four years shaping education policy and determining how much funding our children’s public schools will receive.

We must hold them accountable for every child’s education.

We are very happy to be welcoming Governor Tom Wolf back for another four-year term. He will be working with a legislature that has 41 new members in the State House and 7 new members in the Senate.

Republicans will continue to control the PA General Assembly in the 2019-20 legislative session. They will tentatively hold a 29-21 seat advantage in the Senate (down from 34-16) and a 109-92 advantage in the House (down from 121-82). There will be special elections for 2 House seats.

If we want lawmakers to prioritize public school students, we will need to continue to speak loudly and with one voice in support of a state funding system for public education that will give every child the opportunity to have a bright future. We will need to continue meeting with our lawmakers to ensure that they know the people who elected them value public education and that we expect them to make funding our children’s schools their top priority.

On Saturday, November 17th, from 9:00-12:00, advocates will come together at eight regional summits to build a statewide movement to demand that Harrisburg fund our children’s public schools.

Summit attendees will have the opportunity to network with local and statewide change makers leading the fight for school funding and map out a plan to spur action to build support for public schools in your community.

Beyond school funding, we are developing our policy agenda for the new legislative session. It is exciting. The new year will bring many opportunities to strengthen Pennsylvania’s public schools so all children will get the education they need and deserve.
